The artist

Since 2000, Jules Valentin has been passionate about photography and strives to capture his maritime meanderings through his lens. He never thinks twice about sailing into the open sea to explore the calm and the stormy. In his personal projects, he orders and assembles photographs of his chosen locations, featuring a palette of rare and intense silver hues. The sight of them evokes a kind of fresh coastal breeze, the movement of the sea, or a shift and then freezing of time. With a deep admiration for the British photographer, Michael Kenna, Jules Valentin explores his fading and ethereal seascapes in a new way. Just like his mentor, and just as strikingly, he uses his lens to reveal the universal power of nature and the elements: stars in motion hanging over the calm and turbulent ocean, the wind brewing the clouds and hurtling the waves.  ... About the artwork

The sky, ocean, coastlines, and horizon are brought together in the solitude of the undecided hours of dawn or twilight. Strangely, the scene seems to exist in an alien space, which is contradicted by the presence of the familiar: beacons, dykes, lighthouses, jetties, and walkways. His seascapes invite us to commune with the image. Like Atget\'s photographs, they are devoid of all human presence. Only the traces of human acts allusively imply their presence. The viewers imagination is given free reign to invent a seascape narrative. In this world, where the horizon is neither sky nor land, the exposure time varies from minutes to hours, producing a contrast of textures, emblematic of Jules Valentin\'s style. Quiet morning was captured in Saint-Malo in 2016. According to the photographer, we can observe the slow passing of time over the diving board of the seawater pool at Bon Secours beach.

Alfredo Sanchez was not predestined for photography. Born in Mexico in 1954, he studied law and took up a career in the private sector. “My free time was spent playing tennis, horse riding, and let’s not forget my favourite pastime: photography,” he says. Much later, towards the ...

PEDRO JARQUE KREBS

Ferocious beauties isolated from all context, as though they had been captured in their most secret intimacy, this is the remarkable artistic gesture of Peruvian photographer Pedro Jarque Krebs, restoring to the animals some of their stolen dignity. After studying philosophy at t...
