Andy Yeung

Compact city

About this photograph

How does the artist express the monumentality of the architecture that surrounds him? Navigating through the streets of Hong Kong can be a difficult experience, particularly since the city is one of the most densely populated in the world. With around 7 million people living within 1 100 square kilometres, it is the city with the most skyscrapers standing over 150 metres tall. The young artist Andy Yeung thus uses various photographic techniques while also delivering highly personal testimonies that subvert all notions of traditional perspective. Whether looking up to take in the full expanse of these structures, or taking to the airways with a drone for the "Urban Jungle" series, his optical illusions are striking. With their abstract quality, these photographs thus provide spectators with an impression of a graphic composition in which the lines and geometric shapes intersect in an arrangement oscillating between optical pleasure and visual reality.
