The beach, this expanse of fine golden sand, warmed by the sun and disappearing into the waves – is there a more emblematic image than the beach for evoking the idea of travel and holidays? Illustrating the beach and the hours of leisure time it offers first began with painting, in particular with the Impressionist movement. Painters installed their easels outside in order to capture the light and its reflections, the power of the waves, and the trails of sand blown by the wind. It is also the environment we associate with children playing, family outings, our first holiday experiences, and simple pleasures – whenever we have the opportunity to go there. Photographers thus continued this artistic movement to in turn derive endless inspiration. It is indeed a never-ending source of inspiration, as millions of beaches exist, each one different from the last. There are beaches teeming with people that photographer Richard Hirst captures so well. This artist has chosen an aerial viewpoint, which enables him to create optical illusions and a combination of colours, from the sand and turquoise waters to the holidaymakers, brightly coloured sun umbrellas, and beach towels. Jorge de la Torriente takes this perspective of the aerial viewpoint even further. He provides the spectator with a glimpse of what appears to be infinite and without limits. In the mind of the spectator, the beach and the crowds that he leaves dangling, both ordered and disordered, must only continue. And finally, Ben Thomas has chosen to combine the beach, a natural element, with man-made constructions. Swimming pools and tall buildings appear within the same frame to convey a striking contrast. But the beach also represents travel, to far-away places, like those Pacific islands that we dream of so often. More than simply landscape photography, these images of the beach place one element of nature at the centre of our attention. In this numbered, limited edition of photographs offered by YellowKorner, you can escape to heavenly beaches in just one glance. Aerial views, vintage or black-and-white images, every beach seen in an interior decoration is an invitation to discover a beautiful corner of our earth.
