About the artwork

Born in Russia, Alisa Donova is a graduate of the British Higher School of Art & Design. As a teenager, she accumulated odd jobs in the arts before specialising in fashion photography. In this still life taken with a long exposure time in a room with no light, the young woman represents an impossible love, that of her grandparents, who were never able to live together owing to their different religions. The photograph uses limited means, an almost monochrome range and a total absence of theatricalisation in the choice of objects.

The artist

A graduate of a tertiary-level art school in Moscow, the British Higher School of Art & Design, Alisa Donova has been passionate about photography since her teenage years. While accumulating odd jobs in art, film, theatre, and interior design, and even event decoration, only one thing fully satisfies her creative urges: photography. She bought her first camera aged 16 and decided to make it her career after leaving school and devoting her time mainly to fashion photography. Alongside her commercial orders, the young Russian artist has developed personal work. She is particularly inspired by the works of Karl Blossfeldt, one of the key names in the history of the 8th art, whose images of refined and sophisticated nature attest to a captivating modernity.  ...
