About the artwork

The American photographer transports us into the neighbourhood of Flushing Meadows in New York, famous for hosting the US Tennis Open every year. When Richard Silver isn?t travelling the world, lens in hand ? he has a winning list of 75 countries visited and 220 cities traversed over the course of his career ? he has taken to watching as many big matches as possible with his friends. The picture US Open 2011 was taken during the Women?s Singles quarter final from the top of the grandstand of the USTA National Tennis Center. Once again, the photographer uses the Tilt-Shift technique that gives the illusion of the spectator observing a reduced model. The effects of scale and sharp and fuzzy focus give the impression that he is just a few centimetres from his subject, although macrophotography was not used.
