About the artwork

The Transitus series is presented as a tryptic and focuses on seascapes. The composition of each of the photographs entirely revolves around the horizon and splits the photograph into two distinct parts: the divine element and the marine element. This idea of the landscape as a representation of infinity is reminiscent of the 19th century Romantic Movement. More specifically, the Transitus series recalls the background of a famous painting by the German Caspar David Friedrich: The Monk by the Sea (1808-1810). The purpose of this painting is the representation of solitude and the powerlessness of man at the hands of nature for some, or the aspiration towards infinity for others. In either case, Florian Muller?s work follows in the tradition of romantic landscape painting and his work may be described as introspective.

“The spectators’ imagination completes what is missing and what is not thematically broken down forms an invisible layer through observation.”
