The artist

Paris inspires awe; Paris makes us dream. Without banking on the incredible agitation that reigns day in and day out, each of us endeavours to follow our path, sometimes to the detriment of others. The black and white photographs that Damien Vassart has taken since 2007 exalt the majestic nature of both the urban landscapes and architecture that draw our eye. Born in 1984 in the suburbs of Brussels, he first trained at the SAE Institute (a school specialising in audiovisual studies) before settling definitively in the heart of Paris, as a professional photographer. Damien Vassart started out in this discipline by chance, although what later guided his work was already deeply rooted inside him. His images have been exhibited in Paris and have won numerous awards and distinctions between 2010 and 2014: at the International Photography Awards (United States), the Spider Awards (United Kingdom) and the PX3 Prix de la Photographie (France).  ... About the artwork

Passionate about architecture, Damien Vassart applies himself to photographing the emblematic buildings that Paris is renowned for. The "water mirror" in Bordeaux, opposite the Place de la Bourse, between the Quai de la Douane and the Quai Louis XVIII, is a key site in the city: the wet ground becomes reflective, evoking surrealistic musings. By capturing this elegant stone architecture, Damien Vassart pays close attention to the lighting effects, framings and filmic atmospheres that give rise to the most intense emotions in spectators. The angles of coverage make way for sumptuous and poetic decors. In this way, the enigmatic atmosphere, documentary approach and timeless character of each of his black-and-white images evokes an oneiric, silken, almost unfathomable space, as though emerging directly from a dream. Through the prism of his lens, Damien Vassart invites us on a journey of contemplation and escapism.
