About the artwork

Unlike British national Martin Parr who is interested in documentary photography and captures American holidaymakers in close-up, Jorge de la Torriente immortalises the same individuals but in a less intrusive manner. The Beach Life series provides a glimpse of the beach in Miami, Florida. Using a telescopic pole on which he installs his camera 20 metres high, Jorge de la Torriente obtains an elevated and enlarged perspective that allows him to capture an even greater field of vision than usual. This new view gives spectators the chance to immerse themselves entirely in the image and imagine themselves surrounded by bathers. As in The Pickup Artist , from March 2017, the photographs of Jorge de la Torriente suggest a new interpretation of a place. He strives to alter our perspective on the ways in which we perceive our immediate environment. Inspired by the old masters, he also blurs the line between painting and photography, notably thanks to the use of long exposure times and a simplified colour palette.

The artist

Jorge de la Torriente is an American photographer dedicated to the creation of minimalist and modern images. He has garnered numerous international awards, including the Hasselblad Masters Prize in 2018 for his remarkable aerial photography. Born in Miami in 1971, he began his artistic career as an architect after studying at the prestigious Cornell University in New York state. His artistic style is strongly influenced by his initial professional experience as a designer, which he practised for over fifteen years. Its slow process of construction and limited creativity led to Jorge de la Torriente turning his attention to another medium – photography – to further explore his interest in art and assuage his love of travel. Captured on the American continent and in the wide Atlantic Ocean, his landscape photography enables the spectator to appreciate the simplicity of nature while experiencing its immensity.  ...
