About the artwork

While Bernd and Hilla Becher, the initiators of New Objectivity, dedicate their work to photographing industrial installations, French photographer Franck Bohbot experiments with an equally exacting protocol that enables him to draw up an inventory of the urban landscapes he travels through. The systematic frontal and centred views of his subjects offer a documentary dimension based on typologies. It is precisely this systematism and the notion of the overview that confers an artistic and majestic dimension to his works. The Cage explores the timeless relationship between New York\'s playing fields and the unique environment in which they are situated. Basketball, volleyball, baseball, tennis, or handball, each field is undeniably connected to the urban life around it. The white lines that structure the courts or fields, the fences that delimit them, and the geometric shapes that compose them echo the art deco architecture of the city.
