The artist

Bart Ramakers was born in 1963 and grew up, like the brothers Van Eyck, on the banks of the Meuse in Belgium. Today he lives and works in Anvers. His feeling for Flemish painters goes back to his childhood, when he experimented with drawing, painting and engraving, inspired by his art-loving father. At the same time, he became fascinated by historical fiction, music and Baroque and Romantic opera. After studying history at the Université de Louvain, Bart Ramakers worked in communications and marketing, not dedicating himself to photography until 2009. The pictures he creates today are inspired by religion, classical mythology and folklore, whose morals he does not hesitate to twist to his own ends. Since 2009, many exhibitions in prestigious galleries and cultural centres have paid homage to his work, particularly in Belgium, France and Monaco.  ... See more See less

About the artwork

Drawing his inspiration from classical mythology, folklore, religion and sometimes even fairy tales, Bart Ramakers flouts their moral lessons, blithely turning them to his own use. Reinterpreting the scenes of their original stories through the lens of his medium format camera, he offers a new, contemporary reading in which passion triumphs over treachery, sensuality mocks brutality and life laughs long and lustily at death. Strangers in the Night (2013) takes as its setting a bedroom in the Biedermeier-styled railway hotel of the Gare d'Alost. By choosing this louche setting, the photographer aimed to reproduce the atmosphere of Henri Gervex's painting, Rolla, which inspired his composition. The mood is sensual yet disturbing. A young woman is getting up; her lover is still sleeping. But what is her relationship with the man watching them in the mirror?
