The artist

Dominican artist Alina Vargas-Afanasieva celebrates the diversity and beauty of the women of her country. A graphic designer, she first tried her hand at digital photography as a hobby. Her skills soon progressed and her glamorous style came to the fore. Commissions accumulated and publications followed in quick successions (Estilos, Pandora, Santo Domingo Times, Shine, SDQ, Mujer Unica, etc.). Actresses, singers, television stars… celebrities from her country all vied to obtain a portrait signed by Alina Vargas-Afanasieva. In 2011, she opened the Ladybug Pin-Up studio in Santo Domingo. With a team of professionals, she offers a unique experience in the Dominican Republic: the possibility of having your portrait taken as a pin-up. Make-up, hair, clothing… everything comes together for these atypical shoots with a vintage vibe. Once again, artist Alina Vargas-Afanasieva showcases the beauty of women. Since 2013, her singular touch has been the focus of many exhibitions in the Dominican Republic and the United States. She also teaches photography at the APEC University of Santo Domingo.  ... About the artwork

Faithful to her style, Dominican artist Alina Vargas-Afanasieva delivers a work at once comical and glamorous with the Las aventuras de ChapiBarbie y MariKen series. In a theatrical style, the photographer captures the exuberant lifestyle of two characters with names and attributes similar to the famous pair of dolls. “ChapiBarbie” forms a pun in Dominican slang for “chapiadora” or “diamond muncher”.
