The artist

Michael Nalley has a double specialisation in photography and graphic design from the School of Art at Michigan University in the United States. Since obtaining his degrees in 1983, he has pursued two parallel careers, the first as a photographer and the second as artistic and creative director for international advertising agencies. Michael Nalley handled numerous commercial projects for his advertising clients. In recent years, his two activities have truly converged. He now devises image libraries and content for a wide range of brands, while developing exceptional photography work. Based on Bainbridge Island in the Kitsap Peninsula of Washington State, he regularly wins awards in the fields of photography, design, and advertising.  ... See more See less

About the artwork

Several years after undertaking an assignment in Tanzania, the idea came for the Pangea series, in which he takes animals – zebras, leopards, and tigers, to name just a few – that he has photographed in Africa and Asia, incorporating them within photographs taken in the vast, dense, and almost primitive forest of Bainbridge Island in Washington State. The challenge of his compositions consisted in paying attention to lighting details, colour grading, and perspective in order to create images allowing the spectator to project themselves into imaginary environments. For this compositional work, Michael Nalley finds inspiration in the Romantic landscapes of American painter Albert Bierstadt. Particularly influential in the 20th century, his idealised representation of light gave rise to spectacular natural scenes, offering an idealist vision of the American desert.
