MORE INFORMATION ABOUT DELIVERY

The artist

As a graphic designer, Kyle Yu is attentive to visual compositions: protruding forms, contrasted colours, and symmetry of forms. Born in Hong Kong, he studied in Auckland, New Zealand, where he obtained a degree in visual communication. After his university study, he worked in Auckland then in Tokyo, before moving back to his hometown. Given its density and the diversity of its architecture, Hong Kong constitutes the ideal setting for this artist in search of intriguing points of view. When he’s not in the office, Kyle Yu spends hours exploring buildings and capturing the surrounding street scenes. His work allows him to travel to other regions of China. Even on short visits, he likes to get out for a few hours to discover new shots and subjects that he would not have otherwise seen. His dream? To visit Meizhou, a big city in the east of the country, offering unique traditional buildings to photograph.  ... See more See less

“Hong Kong is quite lacking in space, I guess I’m trying to represent that in my photos and at the same time create some space through my photos.”

KYLE YU

About the artwork

As its remarkable architecture attests, Hong Kong is a city torn between East and West, past and future, traditions and modernity. The beauty of its monochrome horizon inspires Kyle Yu, accentuating the colours, symmetries, and perspectives of the towers of social housing that abound in the city. Representing mosaics, his spectacular visuals draw the spectator?s eye. The photographer?s intention is not to reproduce reality but to play with architectural elements and street scenes to offer a new interpretation of Hong Kong. He uses a variety of elements ? from windows to skyscrapers ? to identify satisfying motifs within the chaos of the megalopolis. He then reworks his images in postproduction, always careful to keep the horizontal and vertical lines of his images as straight as possible. Mint was captured on 30 January 2018 in the neighbourhood of Tin Shui Wai in Hong Kong, near the Chinese border and the city of Shenzhen.
