The artist

Sam Mohan lives and works near Bangalore, in India. After graduating with a Master of Arts in Photography and Digital Imaging at the University of Sunderland in England, he has worked as a professional photographer for over ten years. Both his excellent understanding of the effects of shade and light, akin to chiaroscuro, and his taste for staging enable him to transcend genres masterfully. He has thus already attained a vast clientele in the milieus of haute couture and advertising, as well as in the realms of photojournalism and travel reporting. He also works for famous brands (Fastrack, Nike, Puma, Wildcraft, Tanishq, Titan GoldPlus, Louis Phillip, and many more) and is regularly commissioned by the media or by specialised magazines such as Vogue, Grazia, Verve, Harper's Bazaar or Time Magazine, allowing his work to be published throughout the world. About the artwork

Sam Mohan likes to use photography to illustrate a story. For the series ?Killing the Stereotype?, Sam Mohan worked with an experimental approach by hiring amateur models, instead of professional actors, to perform in front of his camera. In a world brimming with advertising and glorifying an idealised vision of men, who are often presented with an over-perfect physique and traits, the photographer chose to present his male models in their natural state, often bearded and with less conventional body shapes. In this group portrait, the central composition, the use of high contrast and the many symbolic details are blithely reminiscent of certain portraits of ordinary members of the bourgeoisie, painted in Holland in the 17th century, or of Caravaggio?s followers. Through these photographs, Sam Mohan thus reveals his non-stereotypical view of men, while also creating a visually engaging story.
