The artist

François Fontaine was born in 1968. He lives and works in Paris. As a history of art student at the Sorbonne, he developed a passion for photography. As theson of a naval officer this practice was closely linked to travel. Thereby he ent toSouth-East Asia, Spain, Brazil, China, Japan and India. Each of these destinations was an opportunity to continue his artistic research from an iconographic point ofview as well as stylistic. These series were awarded and François Fontaine wasa finalist in the Prix Kodak de la Critique Photographique in 1997, the Prix CCF in2005 and the Leica Oscar Barnack Prize in 2006.  ... About the artwork

The Ganges is one of the seven sacred rivers of India. No other river on earth is so fervently admired.Several sacred sites in India are found along its 3 000 km long banks. The city of Varanasi, also known as Benares, is one of the seven sacred cities of Hinduism. Located on the left bank of the Ganges, facing the rising sun, the city is an important site of pilgrimage dedicated to Shiva. Varanasi is famous for its ghats, which allow people to go down to the river to perform ablutions and meditate. The city has been frequented by hermits and pilgrims for over 3 000 years and is dedicated to Shiva.
