About the artwork

These photographs come from the Beach Boys series created in 2015 by François Fontaine. It's an invitation to a journey through the mythical world of Californian surfers of the 1960s. To the sound of the rock 'n' roll and pop music broadcast on the radio at the time, and which inspired the series title, these surfers, America's golden youth, move like articulated figurines in an explosion of acid-drop colors. Bringing a chromatic "shift" to the scenes shown, the photographer creates pictorial and dreamlike images that "attract and mesmerize with their sensual, nostalgic and universal language." In this still fantasized-about Eldorado, representing California at the height of the American Dream, athletic bodies are airily exposed in gleaming light, while longboards glide across unfurling waves of beauty.

Images are the silent witnesses of desire and fear.
