The artist

It was inspired by a trip to the ruins of Angkor with a stopover in Dubai that the series "once upon a time" was born. Like a superimposition of the past and the future. History repeating...  ... See more See less

About the artwork

The simultaneous discovery of the peaceful ruins of the City of Angkor in Cambodia and the cutting-edge novelty of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates gave rise to an aesthetic shock for Chris Morin-Eitner, sparking the creation of the series Il était une fois demain. In the series, which this image of Los Angeles belongs to, the world imagined by the artist is that of a return to nature. The noise, excess, and activity that once characterised our capitals have given way to a lush landscape. As in this photograph, in which the emblematic buildings of the great global megalopolises are surrounded by nature, which has reclaimed its stake. Besides the graphic quality, we understand the photographer’s intention: no civilisation is eternal. To create this “newfound Garden of Eden, full of life, colours, forms, and poetry”, Chris Morin-Eitner photographs his subject from all angles, then recomposes it with other elements, as a digital painter would do.
