About the artwork

From a lion emitting a full-throated roar to the sly gaze of a rhinoceros threatened with extinction, the Creatures by Finnish photographer Antti Viitala present us with some of the most majestic portraits of wildlife today. The series, exclusively shot in black and white, divorces wild animals from their context in order to highlight their bestiality in its most pure form. Favouring the use of high-performance zooms, Anti Viitala manages to capture the minutest details of his subjects. He thus reveals stylised work in black and white presenting the patterns in the texture of the skin. Through simplified lighting, the spectator can hone in on the essential elements without the colour detracting from them, and thus discovers these animals from a new perspective. Whether it be their expressive eyes or aggressive jawlines, we marvel at the beauty and power of this threatened wildlife, which the photographer lovingly pays tribute to.
