About the artwork

While Bernd and Hilla Becher, the initiators of German objective photography, dedicate their work to the frontal photography of industrial installations, French photographer Franck Bohbot experiments with an equally exacting protocol that enables him to draw up an inventory of emblematic streets in the cities he travels through. The systematic frontal and centred views of his subjects offer a documentary dimension based on typologies. It is precisely this systematism and the notion of the overview that confers an artistic and majestic dimension to his works. With this new series from 2016, the photographer plunges us into the heart of nocturnal Tokyo, while a part of the capital sleeps soundly and the other lives it up under its brightly lit billboards. The artist leads us through the whispers of the city, inviting us to discover its secret passages and working-class neighbourhoods.
