The artist

Born in the Ukraine in 1979, Ruslan Lobabov is one of the most influential photographers in Eastern Europe. Early on, he specialised in portraiture and female nudes in black and white. He draws his inspiration from cinema and fashion, producing erotic shots in which the bodies of sensual women are brazenly flaunted under his sharp eye. The models thus represent a certain kind of feminine freedom by disrupting established codes. His images have earned the photographer remarkable collaborations, notably with the magazines Playboy and L’Officiel and the cosmetics group L’Oréal. Ruslan Lobanov does not just take photographs for advertising campaigns and also produces limited editions of his personal work in the form of catalogues and calendars. “Works”, released in 2014, brings together his best productions from the past ten years. He published “Nudes in the City” in 2015, a project that brought together female subjects from Havana to Moscow.  ... “Nothing is more revealing than nudity, even when it’s dressed.”

RUSLAN LOBANOV

About the artwork

Each image by Ruslan Lobanov is a nude and the photograph's accompanying staging is highly sophisticated. His mentor, the nonconformist artist Helmut Newton, initiator of what has been called ?porno chic" in photography, affirmed ?Nothing is more revealing than nudity, even when it's dressed." By exploiting a savvy combination of nonchalance and seduction, this citation applies perfectly to the photographer's unique body of work. Dressed in light clothing or partially undressed, his models adopt daring poses that connote them as confident and dominant femmes fatales. Heads held high, they parade in public places while retaining a natural aura. Through the use of black and white, under perfectly controlled lighting that reconstitutes the atmospheres of the 1960s, these cinematic images possess an underlying narrative dimension. Despite the provocative character of his work, Ruslan Lobanov defends a symbol, that of women's beauty and freedom.
