About the artwork

Elena Volkova, also known under the pseudonym of Emilia Elfe, brings old advertisements to life through whimsical and glamorous collages. Overflowing with creative energy and inspired by the unique personalities of each and every woman, the Russian artist adorns the faces of her various collage models, thus creating a perplexing optical illusion that entices you to take a closer look. Can you recognise the jewellery, feathers, and flowers that embellish her portraits?

The artist

Based in Moscow, Elena Volkova is a vintage inspired collage artist. She started making her first collages in 2015 using advertisements from the 1940s and 1950s and quickly became known under the pseudonym of Emilia Elfe. Inspired by the extraordinary uniqueness of all women, her whimsical and glamorous style develops as a tribute to the masters of fashion photography, such as Horst P. Horst and Richard Avedon, among others. When asked about her creative process, the Russian artist explained: “Firstly, I choose the photo of a woman who inspires me. I then analyse her characteristics – state of mind, personality, mood, etc. - and finally, I reveal what I perceived by adding details through collages.”  ... See more See less

“The wall belongs to the ‘retards’, ‘inept’, ‘rebels’, ‘simpletons’, to all those with a big heart. It is the blackboard of the school of life,” says French-Hungarian artist Brassaï in his famous back Graffiti. A veritable ode to urban art, Brassaï’s reflection was to mark the a...
