About the artwork

A true storyteller, Nicole Holz devises dense visual compositions with strong narrative power. Her fantastic and poetic photographs enable her to give her most chimeric thoughts a concrete form, through her depiction of creatures succumbing to all kinds of human anxieties, desires, and fantasies. Characterised by a pared-down and raw style, sketching out dreamlike landscapes, Nicole Holz's stagings resemble paintings that are reminiscent of surrealistic works by Dutch painter Jerome Bosch or the absurd compositions of Spanish surrealist Salvador Dali. With Game Over , magic or witchcraft take over the scene and immerse us in the world of games. At the end of the game, we become attached to her images just as we are attached to our childhood fantasies.

The artist

Born in 1971, Nicole Holz works as an independent photographer near Frankfurt, in Germany. As a child, she discovered photography using an old Pentax model. Nonetheless, it wasn't until the digital revolution in 2009 that she became highly interested in the medium. Her artistic work is mainly based on series pertaining to nature, landscapes and whimsical worlds that do not adhere to the traditional rules of photography. Finding inspiration in abstraction, she creates surrealistic compositions that are stagings caught up in movement, but that are both fluid and meditative, leaving spectators immersed in their deepest thoughts. Nicole Holz uses the term visual philosophy. She exhibits her photographs during cultural and artistic events in Germany and recently participated in the international arts fair in São Paulo, Brazil (SP-Arte Latin American Art Fair 2015).  ...
