About the artwork

Akif Hakan Celebi sees the world as a set. His horizontal compositions adopt the format of the movie screen when his models pose with the virtuosity of actors in front of the lens. His fantastical photographs are full of unusual and contrasted colour combinations. From fashion shots to artistic nudes, from sensual portraits to stylised stagings, Akif Hakan Celebi frees himself of the traditional rules of photography in order to combine techniques and styles.

The artist

First attracted by the world of television, Akif Hakan Celebi studied video production at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale in Florida. By turns a television producer and short-filmmaker, editor-in-chief or cameraman, he progressively created ties between the fields of art and media before definitively devoting his time to photography in 2004. Influenced by Asian directors, this American born in Istanbul composes cinematographic images whose expressionistic, colourful, and sensual settings sublimate women from Turkey to China. Nominated in 2006 by Max Magazine as one of the ten most promising photographers, he was also a finalist at the International Color Awards the same year. When he is not exhibiting across the globe, Akif Hakan Celebi collaborates with the most prestigious fashion magazines including New York Harper's Bazaar . It was in 2011 that the American Photo Magazine lauded his talent by awarding him Picture of the Year for the photograph entitled Desert Freaks of Noah Purifoy.  ... See more See less

CLAUDE DEGOUTTE

“The wall belongs to the ‘retards’, ‘inept’, ‘rebels’, ‘simpletons’, to all those with a big heart. It is the blackboard of the school of life,” says French-Hungarian artist Brassaï in his famous back Graffiti. A veritable ode to urban art, Brassaï’s reflection was to mark the a...
