MORE INFORMATION ABOUT DELIVERY

The artist

Born in Canton in 1973, photographer Jeff Kwok chose Hong Kong as his adoptive island. Located several kilometres from his original city, he rediscovered the land of his ancestors who lived there prior to their exodus to continental China during World War II. After studies in Germany, he continued his university cursus with a Masters in Finance at the prestigious University of British Columbia (UBC) in Canada. The young man put his technical skills and enthusiasm to good use in the megalopolis, moving there to develop a variety of activities, both commercial and artistic. Passionate about culture, architecture and landscapes, he takes sensitive portraits of the countries he travels to, full of admiration and poetry. While his encounter with photography occurred in 2000, his talent was recognised four years later with the selection of one of his images for the entrance of a restaurant. Finding the confidence to pursue his passion, he thus started his own business and now criss-crosses five continents to take photographs that are gaining recognition in Asia.  ... See more See less

About the artwork

Jeff Kwok is an artist oscillating between Hong Kong, a modern city with vertiginous skyscrapers, and the landscapes of continental China with their enshrining atmosphere, which he criss-crosses in the course of his photographic journeys. Entranced by the natural splendours and architectural heritage of what was the Chinese civilisation during the dynastic period, the photographer travels to the sites of pilgrimage to testify to this past and the wealth of cultural diversity of his country. This photograph produced in June 2013 in Lijiang, a city in Yunnan province, was taken on the steps of a traditional house commonly known as a hutong. The images that he composes with extreme precision have been reworked in order to attenuate their colours. Pale images, they leave room for the imagination and can evoke memories or simply allow us to dream. In the photographer's works, juxtaposition and colour contrasts effectively enable the forms to be revealed and accentuate the depth of the landscape, with all of its magical quality.
