About the artwork

A witness of his time, Jean-Philippe Carré-Mattei travels the world with his digital camera, without limiting himself only to the borders. The photographer captures images of his routes through landscapes and transitional zones that the French anthropologist Marc Augé would describe as non-places. These are the anonymous sites that emerged with the advent of modernity and that are home to an increasing number of individuals every day. They are just as likely to be the installations required for people's accelerated circulation, such as motorways and means of transport, as they are major hotel chains with their interchangeable rooms. Jean-Philippe Carré-Mattei invites the spectator to see the world from new perspectives with aerial views of the artificiality of Dubai, taken from a hydroplane: the city under construction with its airs of science fiction, the highest tower in the world disrupting ratios of scale and rendering its surroundings non-existent, or a motorway interchange framed with extreme geometricization.
