The artist

Jörg Dickmann was born in 1973 in Sauerland, Germany. He started taking photos as a child, his father always had his SLR camera with him, photography has therefore always been a part of his life. In the beginning he only took holiday snapshots, just for the fun of it, with no serious ambition. This changed when the possibilities of digital processing revolutionized photography. When he bought his first DSLR, he began to experiment. There was a huge improvement in the quality of his work and he began to take photography more and more seriously and professionally. After publishing his work on the web, he received a huge amount of positive feedback from professional photographers. His photos were published in several German magazines: Foto Praxis, Focus, ELLE City, Which motivated him to find his own photographic style. His work focuses mainly on urbanism, architecture and nightscapes. Jörg has always been self-taught and wants to show his own view of the world. He doesn't want to copy reality, he wants to create his own  ... See more See less

About the artwork

When he started out in Düsseldorf, Jörg Dickmann was initially interested in the work of influential artists such as Andreas Gursky, Thomas Struth, or Thomas Ruff, and particularly the German Objectivist movement initiated by the photographer couple Bernd and Hilla Becher at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf. His unique style was affirmed on his many escapades across the globe. Focusing mainly on urban photography, he travelled to Beijing, the Chinese capital that possesses an incredible palette of colours, for those able to tame them. A political, economic, and cultural centre, the city is renowned for its ancient architecture, palaces, imperial gardens, and temples. Today, it is undergoing major transformations and owes its international renown to its contemporary buildings. The Beijing National Stadium is represented in this photograph, also nicknamed the Bird’s Nest, owing to the unique form of its steel architecture, designed by Swiss architects Herzog & De Meuron and at the recommendation of contemporary Chinese artist Ai Weiwei. It represents the Summer Olympic Games of 2008 and hosted the athletics competitions, the final phase of the football tournament, as well as the Opening and Closing Ceremonies.
