About the artwork

In the fantastical series “Alice’s Kitchen” created in 2015 in Toulouse, photographer Catherine Pluchart reveals in images the nurturing role played by the female sex. Behind her oven, the perfect-looking young woman, sporting a blonde wig that is as smooth as her body is slender, seems exhausted by her tasks as a domestic goddess. She prepares cupcakes made from model clay whose acidulous colours perfectly match her glittery pink nail varnish. Food is a central subject in our society, as is the question of the role of women and their representation. Women continue to suffer forms of male domination today, whether it be in daily meal preparation, aesthetic diktats, or pressures to remain trim. It is in these themes that Catherine Pluchart finds her inspiration and creates photographs in a provocative style.

The artist

Catherine Pluchart was born in 1978 in Cambrai, in the north of France. As a teenager, she discovered a true passion for drawing and photography, two practices that enabled her to undertake, several years later, studies in the fine arts at the Saint-Luc Institute in Belgium. Classes in art history and painting have considerably influenced her photographs, which, in their construction, more closely resemble paintings. Momentarily leaving aside photography when she entered working life, it came back to her as a clear choice some ten years later, on a trip to French Polynesia. Catherine Pluchart moved to Paris and decided to launch her professional career in 2010. Sensitive to the beauty of images and that of her female models, she creates aesthetic and perfectly framed stagings resulting in graceful and poetic pictures. Internationally renowned, her photographs are notably published in Vogue Italia and Uomo Vogue.  ... See more See less

CLAUDE DEGOUTTE

“The wall belongs to the ‘retards’, ‘inept’, ‘rebels’, ‘simpletons’, to all those with a big heart. It is the blackboard of the school of life,” says French-Hungarian artist Brassaï in his famous back Graffiti. A veritable ode to urban art, Brassaï’s reflection was to mark the a...
