SCOTT KELBY

About the artwork

With the series The Great Indoors, the American photographer produces dazzling representations of highly symbolic historic buildings. Taken on 3 October 2013 at the Vatican, the image A World Above Us presents the magnificent ceiling of Saint Peter?s Basilica, the most important religious building for Catholicism. The depth of field in a low-angle shot reinforces the solemnity of the location. ?When I admire these interiors, I see beyond art and perfect symmetry ? I see devoted artisans and architects for whom creating these places of communion had become their life?s work.? He adds: ?One of the things I wanted to do with this series was to render each image as timeless as possible. I wanted to remove the clues, and that meant obtaining special authorisation to photograph the empty space, before or after public opening hours.?
