The artist

Born in Frankfurt in 1955, Bernhard Hartmann began his artistic career at the age of 18 as a press photographer for a German newspaper. Self-taught, he studied art and became a landscape photographer after discovering this medium with the aid of his parents? Polaroid. He creates dramatic and cinemascopic images that are often compared to the Romantic paintings of Caspar David Friedrich, but also to the dramatic natural scenes by English painter William Turner. He prefers to photograph places where the arts are practised and expressed and thus presents series on operas, theatres, or European manors. A lawyer in Munich, Bernard Hartmann now lives near Lake Starnberg in the Bavarian Alps. His works belong to numerous private collections and have been shown in the United States, Spain, Italy, and Germany. He was elected ?Photographer of the Year? by a Swiss magazine and won the ?American Black-and-White Photo Awards? as well as the ?Panoramic Epson Award?.  ... See more See less

I love what is beautiful. The serenity of a beautiful garden and the grave of an architectural monument must provoke the same emotion for the viewer. They must be enchanted through their emotions.

BERNHARD HARTMANN

About the artwork

German photographer Bernhard Hartmann manages to captivate our gaze by dedicating an unusual photographic series to the fascinating city of New York. With a great flair for aesthetics and balance, he presents the most significant architecture, colours, and lights of the urban landscape to provide cinematographic and highly contrasted points of view. On a cold winter's night, exposed to the wind and snow, this glimpse of the effervescent neighbourhood of Manhattan was captured from a little park tucked away near the Hudson River in New Jersey. It offers an uninterrupted view of the silhouettes of buildings and the many skyscrapers seen on the horizon between the bare branches of a lone tree. He thus invites us on a journey, to intrude within the nocturnal landscape of the city that never sleeps!

DAMIEN DUFRESNE

As Damien Dufresne says himself: "I let my hands do the talking". His approach is totally new in that it's at the crossroads of makeup, body art, artistic direction and photography. The resulting complexity, technicality and beauty are impressive. Damien Dufresne, a make-up arti...

ALFREDO SANCHEZ

Alfredo Sanchez was not predestined for photography. Born in Mexico in 1954, he studied law and took up a career in the private sector. “My free time was spent playing tennis, horse riding, and let’s not forget my favourite pastime: photography,” he says. Much later, towards the ...

PEDRO JARQUE KREBS

Ferocious beauties isolated from all context, as though they had been captured in their most secret intimacy, this is the remarkable artistic gesture of Peruvian photographer Pedro Jarque Krebs, restoring to the animals some of their stolen dignity. After studying philosophy at t...
