Mark Fisher

The Abyss Below

About this photograph

?Mountaineering in high mountain ranges is a dangerous game. This photograph shows CJ Pearson descending the ?Chicken? corridor of Mount McKinley or Denali, the highest mountain in North America. The conditions in this corridor have deteriorated to the point that abseiling has become the only safe option. The goal was to reach the glacier below, but falling stones and water proved to be a formidable obstacle. Alone on this huge cliff, the outcome was uncertain, and we headed towards the abyss, our only hope of escaping from this terrible situation.? M.F.
