Japan, about 1880.The shamisen is a traditional plucked musical instrument used in Japanese music. It is a lute with a long neck and smooth frets which is played kneeling down. Traditional shamisen music interjects long silences giving more strength to the notes.

Sashichi Ogawa was a Japanese photographer who settled in the town of Yokohama at the end of the 19 th century. He would have married Kusakabe Kimbei’s daughter.
