LES TÂCHES SOLAIRESAbout this photograph
A reproduction of the landscape is at the origin of Alastair Magnaldo?s work. In general, photographic representations are limited : a landscape extends well beyond the strict framework of its representation. In Magnaldo?s work, a landscape is an invitation to dream and to poetry. Each detail has its own meaning, each element a use and each scene tells a story. We have all dreamt of going to sleep in cotton-wool clouds, to twirl amongst the stars or rub shoulders with the moon. The photographer endeavours to render these children?s emotions. His own children are photographed in landscapes which are magical. He is inspired by children?s dreams, their freshness and their false naivety in order to create a world of his own.

Alastair Magnaldo first encountered photography when he was ten years old, captivated by illuminated black and white prints. This luminous vision of photography has stayed with him. He tries to capture this light in his compositions. Colour is used for the unique purpose of adding atmosphere. Alastair Magnaldo is a scientist by training and remains attached to an experimental and creative approach. He decided to perfect his technique in order to free himself from technical constraints. Some of his photographs are photomontage, but others not and the viewer cannot be certain. What the photographer calls ‘digital prints’ result from this approach.
