Isolation IAbout this photograph
Sourcing her inspiration in the works of Edward Hopper and Gregory Crewdson, for her series Isolation, Jade Mai focused on the phenomena of alienation and isolation that weigh heavily on our contemporary society. In dark and remote settings, she thus highlights the solitude of elegantly dressed men and women. Their disoriented or pensive attitude creates a certain ambivalence that gives the spectator's imagination free rein. Frozen in a bluish light, her characters are highlighted through powerful chiaroscuro, which considerably increases the dramatic tension of the scene. The artist's experimental approach in this behavioural study of humankind confers both visual and psychological potency to her photographs, which thus acquire real autonomy. In this way, they oppose the usual representations in fashion photography, which all too often repeat the codes of an idealised and inaccessible world.Read more Read less
