Chinatown, South Of East BroadwayAbout this photograph
Manhattan's Chinatown is an ethnic Chinese enclave located on Manhattan Island in New York City. Manhattan's Chinatown is one of the largest and oldest ethnic Chinese communities outside of Asia. Chinese greengrocers and fishmongers are clustered all along East Broadway (especially by Catherine Street). Due to the high savings rate among the Chinese, there are many Asian and American banks in the neighbourhood. There are almost 200 Chinese restaurants in this area as well as some factories. Although the vast majority of this industry is based in China, the clothing industry remains, in Chinatown, an important line of business. Much of the resident population growth is due to immigration. As previous generations of immigrants gain language and education skills, they tend to move to better housing and job prospects that are available in the suburbs and outer boroughs of New York.Read more Read less
