BANQUISE, ÎLE DE CORNWALLIS

About this photograph

ea ice forms in ?floes? of various sizes and shapes often creating stunning graphic patterns. The winds and currents always keep it moving. Bright white ice reflects sunlight. In contrast, open water is very dark and absorbs more energy. As sea ice melts more water is exposed, which increases warming. Ice in the Arctic sea is on average twice as thin as 20 years ago. This year, the 2007 record for minimum summer sea ice was almost broken. Some scientists predict that an ice-free summer at the North Pole could happen as early as 2015.
