DIAL S FOR SASHAAbout this photograph
Having travelled the length and breadth of the United States in their camper van, the atypical photographer couple Formento + Formento continue to stage the American women that they meet en route, with the series Circumstance ? America Down on Bruised Knees. BJ and Richeille Formento have together developed the hidden story of these damsels in distress, set against a modern landscape, questioning the limits of the land of the free. Through the use of sophisticated lighting and the implicit and quasi-systematic violence of the scenes that they create, each of their photographs denounces an omnipresent tension, extending beyond the frame of the image, as though the photograph was a thriller caught in freeze frame. In these recent pictures taken in Miami in 2016, the artists pay tribute to the cinematography of Alfred Hitchcock, the self-portraits embodied by feminist Cindy Sherman, or the realist paintings of Edward Hopper. They explain their work with a quote from photographer Diane Arbus: "The world is full of fictional characters in search of their story."Read more Read less

Partners both in work and in life, BJ and Richeille Formento have collaborated since 2009. After studying fine arts at the Academy of Arts University in San Francisco, BJ began his career in New York after assisting major photographers such as Richard Avedon, Mary Ellen Mark, and Annie Leibovitz. Richeille, who studied at the prestigious Central Saint Martin's College of Art worked until 2005 in the fashion industry as an artistic director and designer for top brands as well as independent labels. After three years living together, they decided to combine their talents. Their famous portraits of women, at the crossroads between fashion and visual creation, have already toured the globe. They continue to garner huge success, through their publication in such renowned and prestigious media as Wolf Magazine, Aesthetica or Vogue Italy, the magazine responsible for organising the New Exposure competition in which they finished finalists in 2012. The artistic duo was thus immediately propelled into the world of fashion, holding multiple international exhibitions in Paris, London, Berlin, Stuttgart, and Düsseldorf, as well as New York.
