Flatiron DistrictAbout this photograph
The Flatiron District is a small neighbourhood in the New York City borough of Manhattan, named after the Flatiron Building at 23rd Street, Broadway and Fifth Avenue. The term 'Flatiron District' is recent (approx. 1985), and is due to its increasingly residential character, as well as to the increase in the number of restaurants in the area. This area, made up of primarily commercial buildings, used to be known as the 'Photo District' because of the large number of photographers' studios which moved there because of the low rent. A part of the area was known as the 'Toy District', in reference to the toy manufacturers located in the Toy Center buildings at 23rd Street and Broadway and the area around it. Since the 2000s, many publishers have their offices in the district, as well as advertising agencies and computer companies and start-ups making this area a new 'Silicon Alley' or 'Multimedia Gulch', along with TriBeCa and SoHo.Read more Read less
