About this photograph

The photographs of Steve Hiett taken between 1970 and today are representative of his style, a style that distinguished itself as a model for all fashion photographers. Regarding his work, critics often evoke an acidulous world of flashy colours, pop stagings and stunning beauties in lascivious poses. This contemporary of Guy Bourdin and Helmut Newton cultivates the art of provocation and a taste for mystery. All of the top fashion magazines including Vogue, Elle and Harper?s Bazaar publish his masterful pictures, starkly lit and in saturated colours.

The artist
Steve Hiett

Regarding his work and fashion photography in general, Steve Hiett says: “Photography is recording what you’re seeing. Fashion photography is portraying what you’re thinking about. It’s a process built up based on your imagination.” This quote from Steve Hiett explains why, more than 40 years after he started out in fashion photography, he is still at the top of his game. The photographer known as “the director of colour” did not plan to become a fashion photographer, let alone one of the masters of the genre. After studying painting at the London Royal College of Art, Steve Hiett branched out into a career as a musician, then artistic director and advertising filmmaker. At the age of 27, he produced his first fashion photographs and eventually devoted his time exclusively to this activity.
