Akila Berjaoui is a photographer born in the coastal city of Tweed Heads in northern Australia. Given her double culture, she conserves her paternal roots in Beirut, Lebanon, and remains captivated by the Australian beaches that she visited as a child on long holidays in her maternal family. Now living in Sydney where she attended university, Akila Berjaoui first worked as an intern for the fashion magazine Russh before pursuing her career as a fashion designer. The starting point of her photographic career arose a bit later, when she was called in to replace an absent photographer at short notice for a fashion shoot. The shots taken with her Polaroid that day were to seal her artistic fate. Ever since, she has travelled all over the world producing sensual images by continually referring to the touristic atmospheres of the 1970s in the work of Slim Aarons, to the faces of Claude Nori's young women, or Bruce Weber's black-and-white portraits.
