Before moon rise

Über diesen Fotografen

Recent works produced in the spring of 2014, the See Sea series that this photograph belongs to, comprises poetic observations of the Taiwanese coastline near the village of Hsuhai in the southeast of the country. Living for nearly two months facing the Pacific Ocean, the young photographer Po Chen studied the sea through his lens every day. ?The ocean in different each day, even every house, every minute facing the sea is therefore unique.? These almost identical images require the photographer to remain immobile for several solitary hours, waiting for the right light to sculpt the texture of the water and reveal the colour of the sky appearing over the horizon. These minimalist marine views plunge the spectator into the heart of an infinite natural world and are somewhat reminiscent of the black and white images of Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto.

Der Künstler

From Taiwan, Po Chen was born in 1984 in Changhua on the west coast of the island. Originally trained as an IT engineer, he graduated in 2008 and immediately travelled to North India with the intention of joining a humanitarian and educational association. Alongside his volunteer work, this experience gave him the chance to produce his first images on the shantytowns of Chandigarh and publish the album Indian Drifting in 2010. Armed with this success, the Taiwanese government commissioned a project on the city of Yunlin, for which he produced a second book in 2012 entitled Yunlin, one and all. In the same year, Po Chen definitively ended his career as an engineer to become a photographer. Since then, he has participated in several notable exhibitions, particularly Homeland at the Taipei international airport and I See Yunlin on the Xiluo bridge in Yunlin in 2013.
