Aurélien Villette

If Aurélien Villette's subjects are inspired by buildings in ruins, these are not however always ruins left by their inhabitants. They hark back to the golden age of a bygone era and most of them symbolise a heritage that will most likely be destroyed. The photographer roams the world in search of the spirit he finds in each structure. His wanderings have led him to focus on countries that are marked or were once marked by a totalitarian regime, or those still at war. The ruins that he photographs are perpetually evolving subjects and his images therefore do not always represent their final state, since the structures will surely have a future. ?Au-délà? [Beyond] allows us to observe the Black Sea from the windows of a building located in Romania. Georgia, Abkhazia, Russia and Crimea are located on the opposite side. The limpid horizon that stands out in the image precisely represents Aurélien Villette?s desire for a more peaceful future for this region of the world that has been in a constant state of tension since the fall of the Soviet Union.

The artist
Aurélien Villette

Photographer Aurélien Villette questions the meaning and patrimonial value of ancient abandoned buildings. While the latter represent an era in architectural history, they also bear witness to the specific history of a country, a region or a civilisation. The remains left in these sites are the chronological markers of an era. Ruins become both objects of contemplation and meditation.
