Biography
Yann Layma was born in Brittany in 1962. In 1979, China suddenly opened its ‘bamboo curtain’ after 30 years of being closed to the public eye. 1979 also saw the birth of Geo magazine. Yann Layma was sixteen at the time and these two events acted as a trigger inside him, creating a very strong vision of his way forward, a vocational calling. Since 1982 he has worked for the most important magazines in the world as a specialised independent photographer and reporter about China where he has spent more than 20 years. His passion to discover and witness the Chinese world has remained intact and greatly changed him, bringing another name: Yan Lei ‘the wraths of the warrior of the gates of hell’ - such an iconoclastic name that it often makes the Chinese laugh. He has learned that if to photograph means to write with light in the West, in Chinese: it is necessary to capture the shadows or make the brilliance of the light appear suddenly and look for the resemblance. Yann Layma is the author of "China" with Editions de la Martinière and is also a film director.
